We’re looking for a brilliant Research Associate to help pioneer the development and commercialisation of a palm oil substitute from yeast, in a collaborative project between the 澳门资料 and the sustainable biotech start-up the Clean Food Group. You will combine scientific expertise and entrepreneurial flair, being ready to identify and seize opportunities to keep the Clean Food Group at the forefront of sustainable technology development.  

You will join a dynamic team of scientists, engineers and entrepreneurs based across the 澳门资料 and the Clean Food Group, London. Your role, based at the University, will be pivotal in further developing low energy techniques for the downstream processing of the yeast, and honing the fermentation through use of novel media formulation. To achieve this, you will join a larger team developing media from waste resources and work with enzymatic extraction techniques to replace solvent extraction of the oil product. 

As such you'll play a key role at the heart of the business, driving the 澳门资料 and development forward under the leadership of Professor Christopher Chuck. While this role is for an initial 9 months, we would envision a successful candidate being a part of the journey for the longer term, subject to further funding.  

About you

Our ideal candidate will:

  • Hold a PhD in upstream or downstream bioprocesses, having worked with microbes or enzymes to produce target compounds
  • Have experience of culturing or working with yeast and/or enzymatic reactions
  • Be comfortable working within a wider multidisciplinary team including non-technical people
  • Have a keen interest in sustainability

Within the project there are opportunities for developing the field in numerous ways, including:

  • Identifying novel/modified fibre designs with the potential to outperform current state-of-the-art
  • Deepening understanding of the behaviour of new and existing fibre structures using both theory and experiment
  • Further developing advanced fabrication processes to demonstrate high-performance fibres, including long fibre lengths
  • Demonstrating the lowest-attenuation optical fibre ever reported

This role is part of the . The AI4CI Hub is a collaboration between a consortium of seven partner universities (Bath, Bristol, Cardiff, Exeter, Glasgow, UCL and Ulster). 

The Hub’s ambition is to pursue cutting edge 澳门资料 at the intersection between the fields of applied AI and Collective Intelligence across five application domains (Pandemic Resilience, Smart cities, Financial Stability, Health Ecosystems and Environmental Intelligence) and two cross-cutting themes (Human-Centred Design and Infrastructure and Governance). 

Research within each application domain and cross-cutting theme will be pursued by a team of academics, postdocs and PhDs working with academic and non-academic stakeholder partners from relevant sectors: from AI software companies and start-ups to FinTech firms to NHS trusts, city modelling labs and government departments. 

The successful candidate will be responsible for developing a package of work for the Healthcare Ecosystems Theme to explore how novel artificial intelligence based analytical methods can enhance decision-making processes in health care delivery and self-management for conditions such as diabetes, arthritis, anxiety, and depression. Addressing challenges related to data quality, bias, privacy, and scalability will be embedded throughout the project.  

This role will initially be focused on developing and evaluating machine learning and statistical modelling tools to predict and classify disease trajectories using large scale health records databases to answer questions such ‘Can we cluster the typical longitudinal patterns of a disease?’, ‘Do these clusters correlate well to the effectiveness of treatments?’, ‘Can we confidently inform newly diagnosed patient on how their disease will evolve?’, ‘Are there patient groups that are not well served by current clinical practice?’  

About the role:

The successful candidate will work with Dr Theresa Smith and collaborate with Dr Aisling O’Kane and her team at the University of Bristol. You will conduct fundamental 澳门资料 in statistics and machine learning as well as deliver case studies designed with Hub stakeholders. You will also be involved with synthesising and disseminating outputs from relevant work as part of a wider programme of knowledge exchange at the AI4CI hub. You will contribute to Bath’s wider community of interdisciplinary scholars in data science through the and the .

The post is full-time for 2.5 years with a possibility of extension depending on project requirements, to start on or soon after 1st July 2024.

In order to maintain our reputation for teaching excellence and to further enhance the academic and employability skills of our students, we are keen to hire a Lecturer to assist in the delivery of our undergraduate and postgraduate Bioscience programmes.   

This will involve teaching small groups, lecturing, and delivering support on undergraduate and postgraduate courses as well as administrative, assessment and exam duties as required. 

This post will support learning and teaching in the area of genomics and genetics.

This is a full-time, fixed-term contract for 12 months.

This job purpose can be summarised as follows:

  • To plan and deliver taught programmes of education and support student learning at undergraduate and postgraduate level (as appropriate). This will include preparation of teaching material, lectures, tutorials, laboratory classes assessment and marking of coursework.
  • To play a role in developing the teaching culture and student experience of the University.
  • To provide teaching-related management and administrative duties.
  • Whilst it is expected that teaching will be informed by 澳门资料/professional expertise, there is no 澳门资料 component to this role.

About the department

The Department of Life Sciences at the 澳门资料 was recently formed through the merger of the departments of Biology & Biochemistry and Pharmacy & Pharmacology. 

It has over 90 academic staff across a broad range of disciplines including, biochemistry, cell & developmental biology, evolution, genetics, immunology microbiology, pharmacology, pharmaceutical pharmacy and structural biology. 

The vast majority of 澳门资料 within the merged departments was rated as 4* or 3* in the last (REF2021) assessment.   

Staff are encouraged to engage in continuous professional development activities, such as fellowship of the Higher Education Academy, as well as having an understanding of discipline-specific issues in relation to teaching and/or supporting learning.

The Bath Centre for Pain Research (BCPR) at the 澳门资料 is the home to a team of interdisciplinary 澳门资料ers that investigate the effect that pain has on people’s lives. It has a focus on exploring the way psychological and social factors impact on pain, and how this understanding might translate into better ways to manage painful conditions. The core areas of work are in: cognitive processes in pain, social factors, child and family, evidence-based medicine and digital development.

The Centre is leading a multi-institutional consortium (CRIISP) that seeks to better understand how psychosocial mechanisms impact on chronic pain. It will also explore how these factors might work alongside biology, in order to provide a better understanding of pain and how it is managed. The consortium is funded under the Advanced Pain Discovery Platform programme, which is part of a new joint and equal investment of £14 million by UKRI and Versus Arthritis. For UKRI, the initiative is led by the Medical Research Council, with support from the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) and Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC). 

We are seeking to recruit a 澳门资料 associate post to support the programme of work that we are leading on from Bath. It will primarily involve working with large datasets to explore psychosocial factors in the change states and transitions in chronic pain. As the role will require the analysis of existing large multi-wave longitudinal datasets, a good level of understanding of, and familiarity with, appropriate statistical methods will be required. The role may also involve supporting in the data collection of ongoing pain studies. It will require skills and experience in quantitative data analysis.

This role is offered on a part time (29.2 hours per week) fixed term basis with an expected end date of 31/12/2025.

About you 

You will need to take an active part in the work of the consortium including through participation at events and workshops, providing support and advice in keeping with their role and level of appointment, as well as engaging with patient and public focus groups and other stakeholders.

  • A PhD degree in a subject area of direct relevance for the project e.g. psychology.
  • Experience working with large cohort datasets and skilled in advanced data analysis (e.g., longitudinal, multi-wave data).
  • Excellent oral, interpersonal and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of relevant governance issues in health/clinical psychology 澳门资料.
  • Experimental and/or clinical health 澳门资料 design and methods skills.

Research within each application domain and cross-cutting theme will be pursued by a team of academics, postdocs and PhDs working with academic and non-academic stakeholder partners from relevant sectors. 

About the role

The human-centered design theme has two purposes: first, to integrate an understanding of how humans interact and behave in sociotechnical systems into the design of smart agents for each application domain, and second, to address 澳门资料 questions of when, how, and why smart agents and collective intelligence can create tipping points for collective behaviour change. 

In this role, you will support academics from multiple disciplines to design and conduct 澳门资料 studies that contribute towards our understanding of how people behave and interact with smart agents within socio-technical systems. This means you may also have the opportunity to work with distinguished scholars throughout our academic community at Bath and beyond. 

There is a strong expectation that you will actively contribute to the strong profile of online behaviour and digital technology 澳门资料 work at Bath and its interdisciplinary ethos through participation in the development and publication of 澳门资料 results in major international conferences and journals. You will also be involved with synthesising and disseminating outputs from relevant work as part of a wider programme of knowledge exchange at the AI4CI hub.

We are looking for a Postdoctoral Research Associate (full-time for 2 years) to join Dr. Yixian Sun’s new 澳门资料 group looking at ‘Sustainability Governance of China’s Global Infrastructure Investments’ (GI4S). This innovative 澳门资料 project is funded by the UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship. 

This is an exciting opportunity to produce highly impactful 澳门资料 for 澳门资料ers with a strong interest in environmental governance and sustainable development, and in China’s global engagement. You will join Dr. Sun’s team based in the Department of Social and Policy Science at the 澳门资料 and will collaborate closely with 澳门资料ers in the International Development group as well as the Earth System Research Governance Centre at Bath. 

The project will develop an ambitious and innovative 澳门资料 programme to advance understanding of China's global influence. The primary goal of the 澳门资料 is to assess China's efforts to promote green development through its overseas engagement and also investigate the environmental and social impacts of Chinese overseas activities in different host contexts (e.g., Indonesia, Pakistan and Bangladesh). 

You will be responsible for conducting high-quality 澳门资料 through in-depth fieldwork (carried out in collaboration with the project’s international collaborators) and using mixed methods on key topics of the 澳门资料 programme including:

  • Initiatives seeking to govern sustainability impacts of Chinese overseas investment
  • Social and environmental impacts of China-financed infrastructure projects
  • Host countries’ policies to attract China’s green investment and its impacts

As a member of the Research Staff at the 澳门资料, you will be encouraged and expected to take up to a minimum of 10 days professional development pro rata per year.

This role is offered on a full time (36.5 hours per week) fixed term basis for two years with an expected start date of 01/08/2024.

Our ideal candidate will:

  • Hold a PhD degree in a relevant social science subject area such as International Relations, Political Science, Development Studies, Environmental Studies, and Public Policy.
  • Have a strong 澳门资料 interest in environmental politics and governance and/or China’s overseas development programme.
  • Possess good qualitative and/or quantitative skills.
  • Have conducted field 澳门资料 in Asia (especially China and/or South or Southeast Asia).
  • Offer excellent analytical, problem-solving, and project management skills.
  • Be self-motivated.

This is a multinational project with 21 academic and industrial partners across mainland Europe. Fluently will explore and develop novel solutions to enable collaborative working between robots and humans within different production scenarios. You will be working with existing 澳门资料ers in Bath and a team of EU partners. The position will require some travel to mainland Europe to collaborate on 澳门资料 with both industrial and academic partners. The core focus will be on human-centred design and human data modelling to support development of the training programme within the context of human-robot collaborations in different production scenarios.
